The Unexpected Background of the Mercedes-Benz Logo

Back in 1890, a man named Gottlieb Daimler founded the company that would later become Mercedes-Benz. Then called Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft, or DMG, the company was taken over by two new individuals named Wilhelm Maybach and Emil Jellinek in the same year. However, Daimler’s two sons Paul and Adolf remained involved in the company for many years following its new ownership.

Sometime later in 1909, Daimler’s two sons were reminiscing on their family heritage when a postcard sent by their father in 1872 came to mind. On the postcard, he had marked the location of their family’s home with a 3-pointed star. Soon after in 1909, DMG reimagined the 3-pointed star as its logo, which promptly made its way onto all of the company’s vehicles.

The first rendition of the 3-pointed star was colored in blue. Later in 1926, a new laurel border was added, and in 1934 the color of the star was changed to silver.

The Meaning of the Mercedes-Benz Logo

On one level, the Mercedes-Benz logo meaning is to serve as a reminder of the company’s familial heritage. But is there a greater significance to the Mercedes-Benz logo beyond its family ties? The answer might change depending on who you refer the question to, but here’s what Mercedes-Benz officials have said:

  • The Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star is also a nod to the company’s mission of universal motorization! Each of the 3 points of the star represents a particular environment: Land, Sea, and Air. What does this symbolize? It honors the Daimler brothers’ belief that their company would one day dominate all terrains, in any field.
