Coupe vs. Sedan: What’s the Difference?

Have you ever watched a TV show or movie about cars and heard them describe a sedan or a coupe and wondered what they were talking about? Many West Chester drivers have. Read on as we describe the basic differences and help you decide which one is right for your daily Cincinnati area drive.

Difference Between a Coupe and a Sedan

There are a few key points that, in general, will tell you if you’re looking at a coupe or sedan:

  • Door Count: Typically, a coupe has two doors and a sedan has four. There are exceptions to this, however — a 1971 VW Super Beetle, for example, is considered a sedan even though it has just two doors and an AMG® GT is a coupe, even though it has four doors.
  • Exterior Design: Coupes are designed to be sportier than sedans and the exterior design reflects that. In general, a coupe has a lower roofline, longer doors, and longer rear windows for a sleeker appearance.
  • Performance: The more streamlined coupe is generally lighter than a four-door sedan, which can help it perform better. Available suspension upgrades and additional engine options are also often available when ordering a coupe.
  • Interior Dimensions: While a coupe may hold five adults (if they really like each other), a sedan will do it far more comfortably, thanks to a larger interior and bigger backseat.
  • Cargo Volume: Sedans, being larger, almost always have more trunk space and more interior cargo space as well, making it easier to load up parcels when needed.

Sedan vs. Coupe: Which is Right for You?

Sedans like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and A-Class are an excellent choice for Oxford families who need room for booster seats, backpacks, groceries, and all the other items needed while traveling with the kids. Those without children or Monroe drivers who want a more compact commuter tend to choose smaller coupes like the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and E-Class Coupes.
